These materials will be used for our students who aren't able to go outside for recess due to medical reasons as well as students who may need a distraction to ease nervousness and make assessment and treatment less scary. Students who stay in for medical reasons spend their recess time in the clinic. There are various reasons why our students might not be allowed out for recess by their doctor or parent such as a recent asthma attack, allergies, broken bones, first days back after a hospital stay or surgery and many more. Recess is a favorite for most kids and missing out on something so fun can be a real bummer. I want to make sure there are things available to keep them entertained while I am tending to others who may come in. Missing out on recess does not have to be less fun. Some of these items, such as puzzles and shoe tying practice, will also be useful for some of our younger students. There are times when the little ones come down with a tummy ache or even just sad/clingy because they miss someone at home and the care they need (after illness is ruled out) is simply a hug, reminder that mommy or daddy will be there soon, and a bit of distraction. The puzzles are the biggest hit in this instance. A quick activity that we can work on together to bring their smile back.
