Science CAN be both relevant and informative! In my high-school classroom, I strive to provide my students with an education that is relevant to them now, as well as in their very near future. That can be challenging, but is also rewarding when they see the connection between what they are learning in school to what their parents, or even they, are experiencing outside of school. While teaching my students the fundamentals of physics and chemistry, I also teach them about energy sources, and alternative solutions to using fossil fuels. While we study chemical reactions, we look at current transportation fuel technology as well as fuels that can immediately be implemented with minor modifications (ethanol and biodiesel). It is always better when I can include laboratory experiences to show what I am describing - most of my students retain information much better when they experience concepts first-hand.
