Students will explore themes relating to the American Dream and what it means to be an American. Through research of seminal American documents, literary and current event pieces, and The Great Gatsby, students will gather evidence for an explanatory essay. The essay will explore the relationship between identity and the pursuit of the American Dream. In their rhetorical studies, students will utilize definition strategies and study Fitzgerald's syntax. Therefore, the text will allow student to analyze literature while exploring the text as a writing exemplar. The goal of this project is for students to appreciate the beauty of the written language through both reading and writing.
