We are currently preparing a Peace Room for our K-8 students as a restorative alternative to punitive discipline practices such as reoccurring suspensions. Data shows students who experience traditional punitive practices undergo incarceration at higher percentages. The Peace Room will be a safe haven and redirecting space for students who may be dealing with trauma, anger, anxiety or stress. Students will learn conflict resolution strategies and life skills. Yoga mats and balls will be used for students who will be learning stretching and breathing exercises. Data shows breathing and stretching are tools used for calming and refocusing.
Students can only learn in high trauma and stressful environments when able to use healthy alternatives to violence while staying safe. We need yoga mats that are specially fabricated mats used as an aid during the practice of Hatha yoga to prevent hands and feet slipping during asana practice. Providing soft colors relaxing music, a pleasant scent in the air and of course, a comfortable place for sitting are a must. This is where a bean bag comes into play and can help greatly with stress-relief routines not to mention we will also be taking care of one of the most urgent environmental issues – the deforestation of the world’s last vast natural forests. Once students are calmed and refocused writing journals can be used as therapeutic, self-reflecting tools. We are looking for donations that will support our goal of creating a peaceful, re-centering experience, while teaching life skills.
Teaching life skills will equip students with lifelong tools that can be used at school, home and in the future.
As a teacher and advocate of holistic healing I believe it is critically important to have alternate coping techniques within
the school.
