New materials that are specifically needed for the new robotics season will help the Lab Rats fulfill their mission of spreading love of STEM fields to the community. Our robotics program has taught us many new things. We continue each year to build on skills as we improve on programming, designing and building our robot, understanding the mechanics of how robots work, and most importantly, how to work as a team! Several of our team members are already interested in future careers in technology and engineering. We know that experiences like FTC can help us prepare to make good choices in school that will help prepare us for college and beyond. We also understand our role as mentors and role models for others and participate in outreach activities that will help other students develop skills and interests in programs like robotics and engineering. This summer our team members organized and held a month-long workshop to introduce predominantly Hispanic students to the basics of robotics. We partnered with two groups to provide training for students in grades 4-8th. Our continuing participation in Rice University’s Reach for the Stars STEM Festival and other community venues, help us to get the message of FIRST and STEM education to the general public.
