I started to explore the concept of flexible seating and the benefits in student learning and classroom management. Last year I decided to give it a try and removed all the desks out of my classroom including my own. I set up cooperative tables to encourage student discourse and teamwork. We begin the year introducing yoga balls, beanbags, clipboards for working on their bellies. Students have the opportunity to choose their best learning spots throughout the class. Some students lay on their bellies with a clipboard, some prefer the yoga balls and some still prefer to sit at a table in a chair. The students know it does not matter where they choose to sit as long as they are following the rules for the seating spot and doing their very best.
