My student are Oakland, California high school students who attend a large public high school. They fight the stigma of living in a high poverty neighborhood--over 93% qualify for free or reduced lunch--with resilience and constant curiosity. They enjoy tackling projects and expressing their opinions. When I ask the class how many of them want to go to college, nearly all the hands in the room raise instantly. Because they are artists, many of my students are visual learners, and benefit greatly from the use of images, video, and online media in class. About 45% of my students are English Language Learners, who are working hard to accelerate their English skills.
