Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop said “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experiences and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experiences.” Reading has the power to help students cultivate their own genius through exploring books that help them feel whole and loved. A classroom that empowers students to build their literary personalities helps students develop their identity, skills, intellect, and critical consciousness. This project is asking you to join me on the adventure of creating an inclusive learning environment through a variety of texts to help my students continue to develop not only their reading identity but their full identities through literacy! I am aiming to double the size of my classroom library filled with engaging, relevant, high-quality books.
