My students will research something used by all of them every day: soap. Soap is simply composed of fat, lye, and water. My students will develop a formula (recipe) and marketing plan for their own unique brand of soap. After testing their results they will modify and improve their formula several times with small sample batches. When they master their formula they will make a final batch of soap by scaling up their sample size formulas. The immersion blenders and thermometer will give them the tools to produce successful, professional soap products.
What better way to engage students in engineering and science than with a product they all use every day? This project allows students to operate just like a chemical engineer. They have to communicate effectively with each other, modify and correct their soap formula through testing. They will build a presentation communicating the process they used to develop their product. The students will present their product in a shark tank like format to the class. This project will allow them to work creatively and collaboratively in a realistic and fun way utilizing a product they are all familiar with.
