A new school year is approaching fast and my class is all set up to welcome its new students. But wait, what do I not see...technology! As teachers we are required to develop a digital portfolio, of our student's journey, at the end of each school year. Often times we are taking pictures on our personal cell phones and running to a print shop late at night due to print in color. This is truly an obstacle a simple school camera and color printer could fix. I teach at a model school that incorporates performing arts, visual arts, coding, computer science and STEM (STEAM) within the curriculum. Our urban school receives federal funding for programs that provide free breakfast, lunch and dinner for every student, and Title I services to economically disadvantaged boys and girls. The school currently sits at 100% free and reduced meals. Needless to say we don't receive a lot of additional funding for technology resources. We are a class which includes military families, gifted/talented students, ESL/ELL students, inclusion/special education students and the tech savvy. My students are energetic and very busy within the classroom. Even with parental support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful. But they don't. We are preparing students for college, the workforce and the world beyond, so they can have a better life. The district does the best they can with supplying us with technology to enhance student's learning, however, we don't always have the funding to receive the appropriate resources or the amount needed to fully engage and touch the lives of our students one at a time.
