The cornerstone of my 8th-grade reading/language arts classes is independent reading and choice. No matter what we're doing as a whole class, my students are always reading on their own--and they choose which books they want to read. This approach only works if I have a wide selection of young adult titles that my students find engaging and relevant--books they can see themselves in, or that help them empathize with the experiences of others. I've done my best over the past few years to keep my classroom library fresh by purchasing books with my own money. But this year I'll be teaching two sections of reading/language arts--so I need even more amazing books to get my kids hooked on the joys of reading.

About my class
