My students participate in independent reading each week; this school year, I am adding a day of independent reading because I know how important it is for students to select their own books in order to enjoy reading while simultaneously working on their literacy skills. I have a small classroom library in constant need of updating in order to keep my students interested and reading. Research shows that the more students are exposed to high-quality literature, the more they grow their vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency skills. I have selected various high-interest and grade-level appropriate books in order to entice all of my students and to keep them looking forward to independent reading time. Some of the books are graphic novels, such as Ta-Nehisi Coates's Black Panther, while others are historical fiction, or fantasy. It is my goal develop life-long readers, and I cannot do this without a rich classroom library.
