My students will use the STEM kits to design, test and redesign solutions to challenges faced by our favorite characters during our Tall Tales unit. These skills directly address the twenty-first century skills focus on critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. These STEM kits will allow me to integrate literacy with engineering skills, not always an easy feat. They will challenge students to use their background knowledge of Johnny Appleseed, John Henry and Paul Bunyan in conjunction with original designs. STEM projects allow students to live as real scientists, understanding that the process is just as important as the product.
