The Alliance for Childhood and Defending the Early Years Foundation confirms that "young children learn best through meaningful, play experiences." Unfortunately, increased testing and academic requirements are pushing play out of kindergarten classrooms. My kindergarten students are energetic, eager to learn, and LOVE to play. I want to bring play back into my kindergarten classroom, but I need your help! A dramatic play area will allow students to practice the academic skills they are learning in the classroom while building their vocabulary, speaking, and listening skills through interactions with their peers. In my classroom, I need materials to create dramatic play centers that encourage imaginative play. I am requesting a number of different toys to engage my students during self-directed center time. Most of my students come from low-income families and do not have opportunities for dramatic play at home. I am hoping to provide an experience of play with their peers that will promote academic, emotional, and social growth. The materials I am requesting are a play kitchen set with pots, pans, and play food. With the kitchen set and play food, students will also have the opportunity to play restaurant and work on their communication and writing skills. I am requesting a play lemonade/grocery stand that can be used as such and also be turned into a veterinary clinic for additional play options. Finally, I am wishing for a work bench that will appeal to both the boys and the girls. With your help, I would like to create these dramatic play areas; restaurant center, veterinary clinic, tool/construction center, and home center. These centers will be rotated on a regular basis to keep student attention at its peak and spark a love of learning.
