Kids need high-interest books. If kids aren't interested in the kinds of books they're being given, they won't read--it's as simple as that. As an English teacher, my goal is to create life-long readers. I want my students to leave my classroom and continue to read even without me standing over them and giving encouragement. I want my students to be so in love with reading that it becomes a lifestyle. But in order to make life-long readers out of my students, I need to be able to present them with books that will speak to their experiences and interests.
This project will help to fund a classroom library that focuses on diversity. It is my goal to collect books in which kids can see themselves reflected. Stories with characters who look and speak like they do--who are going through the same struggles they are. Most of my students come from populations that are under-represented in schools, and their experiences are often overlooked in the books they are given as part of the "canon." By providing high-interest books that speak to their own experiences, I hope to provide them with alternative sources of literary enjoyment.
These books will be used for independent reading projects and book clubs. I promise they will be well-loved.
