Student choice is imperative in classrooms, even down to the seating options! Right now, I do not have a rug or flexible seating options in my classroom. The requested items, a rectangular rug and some floor cushions, will be utilized by my students for both learning and social times. The rug is the "hub" of our room and is used during so many aspects of our day. We meet there for our important daily morning meetings, a time that we get to know each other, establish friendships, and learn important social skills. We also meet at the rug throughout the day to listen to stories, learn new math strategies, share our work, and play together. A rug is needed for community building and student comfort (it's a cold, hard floor if we don't have a rug!) as a well as an establishment of seating boundaries for the group. When it is independent work time, students will get the choice of where to sit. The rug will be one of those choices; they can sit or lay with a clipboard and complete their assignments, if that's what is comfortable to them. The floor cushions will be used at a table that is lowered to the floor. Again, this presents another seating option to students that may have a hard time getting comfortable and focused at a traditional chair/table setting. They can be used during independent work time, group projects and even during play. Student choice promotes student empowerment, so even something as simple as choice of seats (or comfortable places to sit) will help promote student learning and achievement!
