How can we learn about rockets without any rockets? Sure, we could read a book, label a diagram, or even watch a video; but how do you really ignite a student's passion for science, engineering, math and technology? With a "hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky" rocket. With these resources my sixth graders will be able to conduct hands-on science experiences pertaining to rocketry. We will use free, on-line software to test their own rocketry/engineering ideas in a rocket simulation where they can predict the speed, height, and flight time for their rocket creation and record it in their science notebooks. Then, we can actually construct rockets, engineer them to our liking, fly them and compare our results! Just picture a beautiful morning; the wide, green playground dotted with a school-full of students, parents, community members all watching the launch-pad as Lucy and Iman- two girls from very different backgrounds- proudly prepare their rockets for launch. The other students have their science notebooks ready to record data. 3,2,1 Lucy and Iman, side by side, hit the launch buttons, the crowd goes wild, both girls giggle with delight as they watch their rockets soar!
