This year my third grade class will be focusing on reading novels. Many students do not have the stamina needed to read longer, more complex text found in chapter books.
Poppy is the perfect book to help my third graders embark on a lifetime love of literature. It's about a precocious little deer mouse named Poppy who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even when it means standing up to a great horned owl. This book will grab kids' imaginations and enthrall even those who have struggled to find joy in reading - it will be the perfect book for me to teach as part of my ELA curriculum.
If funded, I plan to use the class set of Poppy to lead daily guided reading lessons. I will engage the kids in peer discussions (small groups) as well as class-wide discussions about the main character and the author's message. We will focus on vocabulary expansion and a variety of writing exercises.
As part of the ELA program, 120 kids will pass through my room (four classes of approximately 30 children each), so while this set is only for 30 books, it will have an impact quadruple that size. The ELA program allows me to put in the time to really master a lesson and then repeat it with four different groups of children. I'm excited about the opportunity to do so using Poppy!
