Our student population in Chicago is diverse and primarily low-income. These students want to excel and learn. For some of them music is a direction that was never open to them because of the cost of private lessons or the lack of a music teacher in their elementary school. For others, they just want to enjoy music. Some will go to major colleges and universities solely based on what they have learned in our high school with the help of my wonderful colleagues. They will, however, be behind in their musical experience due to their socioeconomic status, not their talent. These students need to be well-rounded in their studies. They need to be able to think deeply. It is my job to facilitate that process.
