I teach reading and writing to 5th Graders in a Title I high-needs school in the city of Richmond, VA. I teach three blocks of reading and writing to energetic, fun, and engaged students who are starting to spread their wings and mature into adolescence. Each of my blocks has about 25 students. Most of my students qualify for free lunch, and almost half of my students are English language whose primary language is Spanish. Most of my students do not have books at home, so I make sure to provide them with a wide choice of age appropriate and interesting books from my classroom library (almost all of which I purchase with my own money). In addition to teaching and modeling reading comprehension strategies, I also teach vocabulary, spelling patterns, and the writing process. I strive to instill a lifelong love of learning in my students through engaging activities, games, and appropriate challenges.
