My students who are non-verbal and have limited verbal abilities will be able to use apps on the iPad to give themselves a voice. The iPad would be used as Augmentative Alternative form of Communication (AAC). A goal for my students who use AAC devices is to develop spontaneous and novel utterances. Communication should extend beyond conveying basic wants and needs. My students should be able to express their individual personalities no matter what communication challenges they face. Using the iPad for communication purposes is all about empowering my students and helping facilitate their communication independence. Having the Ipad as an AAC device will allow students to greet people, ask questions, gain information, engage socially, participate in communication exchanges, tell jokes, tell stories, and show empathy/sympathy.
