My students are all female, predominately black and latina, and most are from families that are below the poverty line. Many of them come into my classroom well below grade level in reading, so we spend most of the year focused on two things: building strong foundational reading skills like inferring, comprehension, and vocabulary, and cultivating a love of reading. I work with my students to discover what types of stories interest them the most, and recommend books that are both squarely in that genre and a little outside of it. My classroom has a strong sense of community: first and foremost are always the treatment of others and the effort we put in as a team. Students are asked to work together almost every day to help them build social skills, learn to negotiate and compromise, practice being open to new ideas, and advocating for themselves.
