The essential question of our unit is "Who creates and maintains the modern day Black experience in America?" Students critically examine both fiction and non-fiction texts over the course of the unit to develop a synthesis paper to answer this question about cycles of injustice being maintained within our country - at the expense of people who look like them. One of the central texts of this unit is Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me. His argument is a powerfully framework in which students analyze all pieces of literature and the world in which we inhabit. This is crucial reading for every Black child coming to age in America and I believe it will have a transformative impact on the lives of our scholars.
