As the school year is beginning, I have been racking my brain as to how I want to discuss the recent events in Virginia with my 5th graders. I do not want to talk specifics with them as they are still children but I would love to use diverse books to talk about how we can be more accepting of others. Literature guides meaningful discussion and bridges the gap between students. As a new teacher, I've wanted meaningful books in my classroom that are not only enjoyable to read but also talk about topics that I might not always know how to discuss.
