By providing students with an array of meaningful and relevant literature, I intend on teaching academic literacy skills through engaging content that challenges and encourages them to overcome racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and emotional barriers. Providing access to such texts will not only equip them with the necessary literacy skills to excel academically , but will also inspire great ideas and movements within them that will help build them into strong activists that will impact the world in big ways. We will use these books to make personal and world connections to identify solutions to existing world problems. My hope is that through reading these texts, my students will become educated on issues of social justice and in turn develop the confidence and a sense of urgency and personal responsibility to take every opportunity to spread kindness and love in this world to actively make a real difference in the lives of others.
