My name is Julie Crist and I am a Special Education teacher at North Sashabaw Elementary School in Clarkston Michigan. I have the pleasure of working with some amazing students who range from 5-11 years old and have a Cognitive Impairment or Autism. My classroom is a place where students feel safe taking risks, asking questions, and exploring with their classmates in order to learn. Each child who enters my classroom brings their own set of experiences, challenges and strengths which contributes to the greater classroom community. Many of my students require a specialized environment in order to foster their independence and grow as learners. At times, the lighting, sounds, and overall school environment can present as harsh and overwhelming to many of my students throughout the school day. This project will hopefully allow me to purchase sensory tools which will allow my students to self-regulate effectively.
