I am teaching in a new district and a carpet area is not available. I have used a reading carpet for silent reading or whole group reading and writing lessons in the past 6 years. It is very beneficial to have a comfortable area for all the students to get together and to have that community feeling. It is also easier for students to have discussions on the lesson or texts being read. I have seen the level of engagement change when teaching from a small carpeted area. The students would benefit from a change in seating and a comfortable place to get lost in a book.
