Pre-Kindergarten is not a requirement so there is a handful of students who have not received formal education at all yet. These students sometimes come in behind and need help catching up. A listening center is important because the skill of listening must be mastered in order to read. The majority of my students are Hispanic and speak primarily Spanish in the home. There are some students who have entered school speaking no English at all. With that being said, most of my students are English language learners and the English language reading comprehension will help build the foundations of reading.
