So often, students are told exactly what they should do. Their creativity is put at a standstill because we, as teachers, want them to land at a very specific point or learning objective. We do this with good intentions, but this is not what is going to benefit a 21st century student. Students should be given time to play and explore and to make or remix. The Makey Makey kits allow them to do this. These kits turn everyday objects into a touchpad and connects them to the Internet. The possibilities with the kits are endless, but the major benefits with the kits are collaboration, problem solving, discovery, play, and learning from failure. Our students should be encouraged to play and fail, play and fail, and know that there is nothing wrong with that, as long as they continue to persevere. My students are afraid to fail. They are afraid of what happens if they receive a bad test score or if they cannot put together something in science correctly. I want them to realize that failing is what will teach them. Failing is what will allow them to grow. They cannot do this without playing and failing. These kits will allow the students to do this. It will turn them into innovators to create things never thought of before.
