My students come from a rural area where funding is low and apathy is high. I have been pushing a choice reading initiative that has given my student more opportunity to read for pleasure than some of them have ever experienced before. They have found that they enjoy it more than they ever thought possible, and I need a larger variety of books to offer them in order to keep this new found love going strong. Reading activates creativity and curiosity, which is sorely lacking in many aspects of education and yet these exact attributes are essential for future prosperity.
