I'm piloting a computer literacy class this year, and I'd like to introduce students to coding through an awesome final project: designing and programming a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot to complete an obstacle course challenge. Students will work in groups of four to build and program their robot, then compete against each other in a final challenge. Programming is not a career most of my students consider, having never had the opportunity to try it out; this project aims to change that. Using the program Open Roberta, students will learn to write functions to steer their robots through a variety of sensors. They will also experiment with adding appendages to the robot to pick up and manipulate objects. My school has no funds to support this class, but it has enrolled all 100 students in our 11th grade in four sections of this elective. Your generous donations will help make this class the hands-on experience that excites the next generation of computer engineers!
