I would like to update our nonfiction reading unit with "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban". This book will allow my students to practice nonfiction reading strategies while further developing their appreciation that books are a conduit for social change and action. A classroom set of "I Am Malala" will help challenge students' assumptions of their own power as well as inspire them to "be the change". "I Am Malala" will help my students reflect on women and girls' rights, religious and cultural differences, and deepen their understanding of global terrorism. Additionally, they will practice nonfiction reading strategies and different text features.
