Students will be deep-diving into a book study on The Handmaid's Tale. We will specifically be looking at themes of power, freedom, struggle, and gender and sex in society. Throughout the unit, students will consider the obligations of morality, the consequences of our actions, and the struggle between choosing what is best for self and others. The functions of language, power, and identity will be a central focus of this unit. Students will work in small groups, literature circles, and write essays. If my request is fulfilled, each student will be able to have their own copy of the novel, work on assignments in class and at home, and take responsibility for their learning.
