Imagine being four years old and placed on a bus away from your loved ones for eight hours? My soon to be head starters will be doing just that after Labor Day. Although I've been at Montgomery Knolls for twelve years, teaching Head Start will be a brand new experience for me. I want to provide my new students with engaging materials that will foster their love for acceptance while also nurturing their curiosity and creativity. I want to ignite their desire to learn something new each and everyday. I want them to wear dress up clothes so they can imagine themselves in a profession they've always dreamed of. I want my students to paint their personal masterpieces and take them home with beaming pride. I want them to have baby dolls that are many shades so they can connect with them. I want to see my students rocking them to sleep or curling up to a great book with them. I want my students to learn their letters and numbers in a sand and water table that is simply "fun!" ALL of my students are part of low income, high poverty homes. Through home visits, I hope to begin building relationships with my parents. Our parents are encouraged to volunteer in the classroom where they, themselves can feel safe, nurtured and part of the learning process. Having materials such as dolls that look like them, blocks, paint supplies and dress up clothes will be inviting and exciting. I want my students and parents WANTING to come to school rather than HAVING to come.
