I know from my experiences in high school that building a computer from components allows students to learn a great deal about the workings of computers as well as invaluable troubleshooting experience. I was involved in a Web Design class in the early 2000s that provided me with this opportunity, and I still draw from this experience today. Another benefit to this opportunity is that it creates a sense of pride for the students. In building the computer that they will be doing the coursework on all year, it allows them to take ownership of the class and more importantly, their education. In other programs I've read about, the students have been given the opportunity to choose a teacher to give their computer to for use in their classroom the following school year. The relationship building and continued pride in the technology in the school building is a huge positive that I would like to add at our campus. The items I've requested will allow three class periods of students to learn about computer components and their job, and will allow one of these periods, my Computer Maintenance class, the opportunity to assemble 2 desktop computers. In order to assemble a complete computer a motherboard, processor, power supply, case, hard drive, and memory are needed. I have selected components that aren't necessarily the cheapest, but will allow the computer to have continued use for several years until it will need to be replaced.
