With the manipulatives chosen for math, the students will have hands on learning opportunities. They will build higher order thinking and critical thinking skills through the use of the materials in games, small group instruction, and in independent practice. The students will see first hand how fractions fit into their world, learn valuable life skills in counting money and telling time, and they will make concrete connection to abstract mathematical concepts. Gone are the days of kill and drill and worksheets for our 21st century learners. We are a hands-on, experiential learning classroom and the materials for math will enable students to grow in their mathematical thinking. The use of the materials will supplement, instruct, and provide fun practice and mastery of often difficult concepts. Some of the ways we will be using specific items are to have a concrete example of number patterns using the unifix cubes, illustrating the missing addend/subtrahend principle with counter and cubes. We will use the dice and dominoes in folder games to practice skills like adding double digit numbers, and finding related facts. We will use the Judy Clocks for hands on telling time practice, where students will be able to see how the hands move around the face of an analog clock. The fraction tiles and circles will allow the students to get hands-on practice breaking apart whole number values and seeing the fractions of the whole.
