Developing a math classroom culture that supports productive struggle is essential. This hands on exploring and practice will provide students with a variety of ways to help solve real world math problems. Students will then be able to find the strategy that works best for them through shared learning. These hands on math manipulatives will help my 1st graders grasp the addition and subtraction strategies of Ten-Frames, bar model, number bonds, and place value. These tools can be used in whole group, small group, and independent practice. Students will have the opportunity to analyze why they chose a specific strategy, explain how they solved it, and examine if the answer makes sense. This "think it out" process will help support the understanding of the strategy.
