Self sustained reading is one of the key factors for reading and writing success both in school and later in life. While independent reading is very important, it can sometimes be isolating to read a book and have no one to readily discuss it with you. In order to remedy this, this school year I plan on implementing book clubs in my classroom. I need your help getting started with the first one! Book clubs not only allow students to easily discuss the books they read, they also hold students accountable for the reading assignments. Peer discussion of books is one of the most important keys for deeper understanding of a text. This can be a struggle with high school students because when they read a book as a whole class, some students may fly under the radar and get away with not reading the assignment. However, book clubs are much smaller and more intimate with only three to five members. It is much harder to sneak by without reading when four of your peers are counting on you to have done your part. Reading is a vital part of education and reading interesting and relevant texts can help students to nurture their reading skills. While the classics are important and have a place in the classroom, they should not be the only thing taught. This will be for my first book club that will be in October. I selected a variety of books that will align with our classroom exploration of Gothic themes. These are high interest books including historical fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction. Student choice plays a big role in motivation. Their ability to choose what they read will help with this choice. My hope is for these book clubs to inspire book love and encourage reading.
