My classroom is in the heart of southern West Virginia. We are a small Prek-8 with roughly 300 students. Over half of these students come from poverty level homes. Our community is dealing with an overwhelming and devastating opioid crisis. The effects on our students is downright heartbreaking at times. In addition, our area's chief industry and job source (coal mining) is in a downward spiral Now more than ever it is crucial that we put education first for the next generation. Our students do not have access to the tools necessary to be 21st century learners. many do not have internet access in their homes much less devices to access it. Our town does not have a library. Our school has one, but we only have a librarian two days a week; which means my students go every other week for check outs. If for some reason, such as a snow day, we have to miss our library day we have to wait two more weeks to go.
