Interactive science notebooks are a great way for students to retain and demonstrate their knowledge of material. The right-hand side, or the INPUT page is where they take notes. It is simple and succinct. They are encouraged to add colors, pictures, graphs or drawings to make it their own. In this way, the responsibility for learning is placed directly on the student. The left-hand side, or the output page, is where the student shows their understanding of the content. This could be through answering a prompt, or creating a model. They are encouraged to express their learning however is most meaningful to them. I've had students write stories, create comics, design experiments and draw diagrams. The more creative the students can be, the more meaningful the learning becomes. This is why it is so important to have a wide range of supplies like colored pencils and gel pens available to them.
