Media tools in the hands of students are such a powerful way to to engage and inspire student learning. 21st century literacy is largely defined by media platforms. Students read, write, speak, and think in ways related to digital media on a daily basis. These methods of communication connect students to the global learning community and help them engage the world in a meaningful, relevant way. The DSLR camera and Digital Display will be integrated into the social studies and advanced coding curriculum in my class. Students will be learning to use the camera to digitize their work, document the complex steps in their coding processes and film a historical television series for each unit of study. Students will have the opportunity to present their film and video to teachers and students across multiple school sites to demonstrate their learning and ideas to enrich the community. They will be able to display their work on the digital display monitor so that peers and teachers can critique and observe their work. The main objective of these media tools is the promotion of meaningful literacy development and student collaboration. Students are motivated to learn when they are challenged to grow in their areas of interest and exposed to new ideas. These tools will help me to support the learning needs of my entire student population by offering them visual media platforms to demonstrate their learning and share it with their community in class, during enrichment nights hosted by the school, and across school sites within our district. I am so exited to offer opportunities for my students to grow as responsible learners in a digital workshop and truly hope that you will partner with me to make this dream a reality.
