Our school is focusing exclusively on project-based learning this year and we are placing a special emphasis on interacting with those outside of our school. Last school year, our 8th graders created artifacts and journals from the Civil War Era. Students from the elementary school were able to come to our school and learn about the artifacts and the Civil War from the 8th graders themselves. This school year, I want students to create a sock puppet skit in order to teach elementary school students the elements of plot. Students will be in groups and their skits will be based on stories that the elementary students are reading. The materials I'm requesting are just a few things that will help my students create their project. After doing inventory in my classroom this summer, I discovered that I don't have many markers left, the paint that I have is only in small bottles, and I am also low on color paper. These materials will help the students design their sock puppets and the backdrops for their skits. I want to be able to offer the materials in my class so students would be able to design and decorate their project during our project time and after-school. This would allow everyone in the groups to participate in creating the project rather than just sending it home and asking the students to buy the materials (which most cannot afford to do). Not only will this project help our 8th graders understand plot in greater detail, but it will also make their work more authentic because they will present in front of an audience that is not made of their peers.
