Sometimes we all just need a place to retreat, relax, and recharge. As teachers, this entails a prep period, a lunch period, or just some time squeezing in a quick coffee break, but we ask students to be “on” all day! Students with special needs, especially autism are constantly juggling schoolwork, negotiating overwhelming sensory environments, and navigating the social world. Sometimes they just need a break. For this reason, I am interested in setting up a break area for my students, as well as give them an alternate way of seating, the stand up desks, which research has shown is more conducive than sitting at a traditional desk.
