Ninth grade is a transitional year for many students. Many hope to come to high school and have a fresh start and new beginnings--away from the awkwardness that overshadowed them in middle school. The truth is, many students still face peer pressure and unimaginable bullying, no matter what grade or age. Essentially, they, as we all do, want to be accepted for who they are as a person. For that reason, we have chosen to read the novel Wonder with the Class of 2021 this year as a way of reading, writing, thinking, and talking about the importance of accepting others. This text will provide avenues for us to closely examine many of the causes and effects of bullying and ostracizing on its victims. We also feel that this will help expose our students to a perspective and voice they so often ignore or do not understand. Many of our students live in non-traditional homes or situations. They find much of their guidance and support at school with teachers, counselors, and administrators. Wonder will further the work that we do in not only educating their minds, but their hearts and souls, too. We need to be proactive in our approach to dealing with these issues instead of reacting in a negative manner.
