The goal of this project is to cultivate an environment that acknowledges and appreciates the diversity within the classroom. Students are required to research the country that they themselves and/or their family members derive from, and create a visual and written product that demonstrates their knowledge of this culture. The product they present is a flag that students often print or draw from an illustration for accuracy purposes, and a typed paper. However, all my students do not have access to a computer at home, and we are at times limited in accessing the available technology in our school. In addition, their work (flags and essays) will be posted on chart paper around the classroom to show the diversity in our community. The use of technology is crucial in opening the doors to research, communication, and providing a quality product, and this project for the school year requires students to execute all of the aforementioned. The Chromebooks and printers will be used to create a technology station in the classroom that will allow students to engage in research, type their papers, and share their work through PowerPoint presentations and/or Google documents. Having access to this station during and after school will ensure all students can complete this and all future projects. In addition, to ensure that the station remains clean and safe for students we will use disinfectant wipes. Student work will also be posted around the classroom on chart papers demonstrating their efforts. In researching, writing about, and presenting their cultural background students will learn about the diversity in their classroom, as well as become knowledgeable about their own background.
