The first step to quality playing playing on a quality instrument. Making sure that students have that quality instruments helps keep the music fun and enjoyable for everyone. The current tom set we have is held together with duck tape. Playing on that isn't fun for anyone and truly hinders their ability to play correctly when they're constantly adding more tape to keep it together. My students love music. They love the feeling they gain when they've worked for hours on a song taking it from barely knowing the notes and rhythm to finding the musical depth and emotion of the piece they're playing. Having more quality instruments will help them do this.
