Students in my classes are required to read two texts simultaneously every nine weeks. One of these novels are chosen by each student for interest. Because much of our class time is used reading the assigned text and discussing it, this approach often leaves students feeling guilty about reading texts for pleasure during class. However, there is plenty of research that supports the instructional practice of independent reading in schools. As I researched how other secondary teachers were encouraging reading for pleasure, one strategy that stood out was incorporating alternative seating, classroom furniture besides that of traditional desks. By providing students with comfortable, colorful and compact seats, and placing them in strategic locations, this will help to ensure that students feel that they have a safe spot to read at during class, away from it all (like stations and group projects). The beanbag seating that I chose for instance, I envision being placed two to each side of the room (will be fluid seating to allow change of placement) for pair reading in print books or e-books and should function as a collaborative space. The other two chairs, which are director's style and outdoorsy, will allow for students to present their writing/reading of texts aloud to class. I'm hoping this approach will encourage role-play as well.
