These backpacks and books will allow children and parents to experience quality literature while strengthening children's school readiness skills in the areas of math, literacy, social emotional intelligence, and science. Children will develop a love for reading and learning that will accompany them throughout life! Parent engagement in the child's learning is the key. By allowing the children to take the materials home, parents and children can work together on key skills when it fits into "family time". Having these backpacks filled with hands-on, active learning activities will allow for successful experiences that can be shared with the whole class upon return. For example, the backpack around the book, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, would include the following activities: reading the book together, measuring out water and, with your parent's help, making pancakes for your family (pancake mix included). It will include sequencing activities based on the book, and a small stuffed animal that the child can develop a dictated story detailing their adventures over the week. Parents and children would work through these activities together and enhance the child's vocabulary, literacy, math, science, and social emotional skills in preparation for kindergarten.
