Most, if not all of my students are living in poverty. Many do not have their basic physiological needs met outside of school, and this year, I plan to cultivate a classroom environment that is safe, comfortable, and where students know they belong. In an inner-city environment where poverty and violence is prevalent, many of my students come to school tired, hungry, and angry; unable to process their complex emotions, making it nearly impossible to learn. My students love collaborating, sharing ideas, and using their hands! I know I can't protect them all from their world outside my classroom, but I can create a culture where their thoughts and opinions are valued and and every student is loved.
