At INL we strive to foster an environment where students feel safe and comfortable to express themselves and open up about how they are feeling. As of this school year, we are adopting the philosophy taught through Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice focuses on the importance of building and maintaining relationships. Major components of cultivating meaningful relationships is being able to recognize one's own feelings as well as being able to reflect on how our actions effect those around us. My ultimate goal as the School Social Worker is to teach and provide students with the tools and skills to become the best versions of themselves. Growing up is hard enough. It is even more difficult when you're a child who does not have the support system at home that every child deserves to have. Teaching my students how to acknowledge and express their feelings, alternative strategies for calming down, conflict resolution techniques, and social skills provides them with a chance to grow beyond any of their previous expectations. The materials I have ordered will allow me to better assist my students. Furnishing my office with flexible seating will help them feel at ease in an environment and situation they may otherwise feel uncomfortable in. Having access to materials like the Feelings, Choices, and Temper Tamer cards will add another way for my students to learn about understanding and coping with their social and emotional needs. As INL undertakes the implementation of Restorative Justice practices, I will constantly be seeking resources that will be beneficial and effective for all 650 students I serve.
